We’ve opened a new class day and time for our youngest (and cutest) students. Our Pre-Martial Arts class is specifically designed for children ages 4-6 years — those who are curious and enthusiastic about martial arts but too young for the Kuk Sool white belt (beginning) curriculum. We’ve been offering a class on Fridays at 5pm for nearly 2 years now, and that class stays consistently full. So, we’ve opened a second class time on Tuesdays at 5pm. Class will last anywhere from 30-50 minutes, depending upon the age and experience level of your child. Please call 612-578-5797 if you have questions, or feel free to just show up with your child, ready to try our Pre-Martial Arts class.

I love open houses. I love the idea that we open our homes (or businesses) to the public, invite folks in, let them look around, share a snack or a meal together, and share a little bit about who we are and what we do.Here at Kuk Sool Won of St. Paul, we’re having an open house on Saturday, September 26 from 11am to 3pm. Yes, anyone is welcome. Yes, you can look around, yes, there will be treats and snacks. And the best part is you can come in and not just see what we do, but try it out yourself. Already a student? Come in and play a game with us, maybe try a mini-class and review an old skill or learn a new one. And watch a demonstration by our most advanced students and instructors and get an idea of the amazing things that can be done by any student who puts in the time and training. Not yet a student? Come and tour our school, meet our instructors and current students, learn a little bit, play a little bit, and get all your questions answered in person about our school and the system of martial arts called Kuk Sool Won. Everyone is welcome. Our “house” will be open, so come see for yourself some of the best martial arts in the Twin Cities.

I homeschool my kids. Steffen PSBN homeschools his kids. Well, technically, we homeschool them all together most days, in a group effort wherein one of us pinch hits for the other when time or temper is running short.

I was very pleased to recently learn that another of our students is being homeschooled, and even more pleased that I learned this by reading a lovely blog entry authored by his mom. Carrie Pomeroy’s blog “Playschool” is a mothering memoir in real time — day-to-day thoughts and questions, tales of pride and admissions of shame. Carrie wrote about a day in her son’s Kuk Sool class that struck her, and she has give us permission to reprint it here. If you’d like to read more of Carrie’s blog, visit www.playschooling.blogspot.com.

My son is lucky enough to take martial arts classes twice a week at Kuk Sool Won of St. Paul, a very family-oriented martial arts school right here in the Midway neighborhood. It’s amazing how much he’s learned in the year and a half since he started. He looks so grown-up and serious in his black uniform and white belt, standing at attention in the line-up of kids, bowing and saying, “Yes, sir!” to his teacher. It is a very different culture than our home culture. I’m glad that he is experiencing it. I trust these teachers. I trust what they are offering their students

.Tonight in class, the kids were independently practicing the forms, a series of prescribed movements that are the basis of this style of martial arts. They were supposed to do the forms as best as they could remember them without watching another student or teacher perform them. At times, one of the young students would get stuck–they made a mistake, or they forgot what they were doing, and suddenly, they’d stop and stand there with a deer-in-the-headlights sort of expression, not sure what to do next. Usually a teacher would jump in and help them get going again.

Afterwards, the head teacher asked the class, “What should you do if you make a mistake?”

“Start over,” one boy volunteered.

“No,” said the teacher. ”You keep going. You keep going. And what if you forget or get stuck? What do you do then?”

None of the kids responded.

“You ask for help,” said their teacher. ”That’s what we’re here for. That’s why we keep practicing–so eventually you won’t make that mistake any more.”

Such a simple exchange, but I found it so moving. I’m so glad my son is getting these messages early from strong, compassionate teachers. You can keep going after you make a mistake. You can ask for help. You just have to keep practicing.

It reminds me a little of a story I read once about a famous modern-dance choreographer–I can’t remember which one now. Maybe Martha Graham? One of her dancers fell flat on her butt during a rehearsal and sat there with a stunned expression on her face, not moving, not getting up. The choreographer swooped over to the dancer and exhorted her, “Don’t stop now! Make it into something beautiful!”

I took the opportunity this year of tagging along with Steffen PSBN on his annual trip to Houston for Instructor Training at the World Kuk Sool Headquarters. Although I wasn’t able to participate in the official Training, there was still plenty to do and learn “from the sidelines” as Mel JKN has put it.

The first thing I learned was that, despite our grumbling as his students, Steffen PSBN is NOT actually a testing maniac compared to other school owners. In fact, the word from on high was this: testing is good practice and we all need more practice. At dinner with Master Jeff Green and Sa Bum Nim Ben Mitchell, we got the wonderful idea of giving practice tests to black stripe students who aren’t quite ready to test for Dahn Bo Nim. I got to see our first two students take practice tests on Saturday, and, as an instructor, I’m convinced that they will significantly help. As a mom, it was a little heartbreaking — one of the practice testers was my son, and his emotional unreadiness was obvious. But by practicing, I know his readiness to test will improve. Besides, we came home with testing plans that will be affecting all our black belt testers, and my turn will be coming. It’s always only a matter of time before testing begins to affect you personally.

I also had the pleasure of seeing Pu Sa Bum Nims and Sa Bum Nims testing. It was awe-inspiring, as usual. It also reinforced the practicing of odd-side forms at black belt. Master Daniel Jolly emphasized this point during Houston testing in October — as black belts we must practice forms on both sides equally. And Su Suhk Kwan Jahng Nim Harmon certainly reinforced it during this test.

I got to meet a delightful group of women from the San Francisco Bay area who have trained under Sun Im Kwan Jahng Nim Suh for years. These “California girls” are the students who took up the mantle of school owners when their head instructor moved. None of them went into Kuk Sool with the plan of school ownership, but when the need arose, they jumped into the role. We swapped ideas and stories, compared notes on training pre-schoolers, and had a great time. I look forward to next year and the chance to reconnect with them.

The one thing that I missed that I wish I had been able to witness was Master Daniel Jolly’s speech about loyalty. There are some organizational changes going on in the big wide Kuk Sool family, and, as with any change, there are some grumbles, worries, and doubts. Master Jolly spoke about his loyalty to Kuk Sa Nim and the loyalty that is returned to him in kind. It occurred to me that, ultimately, we are all Kuk Sa Nim’s students. I know how I feel about my students and the lengths I would go to for each one of them, and I trust the same is true of Kuk Sa Nim.

Have you noticed a young woman in classes taking pictures recently? Julia has been visiting Kuk Sool Won of St. Paul taking pictures for the University Avenue Project. Photographer Wing Young Huie, in collaboration with Public Art St. Paul and with funding from the Joyce Foundation, is creating a six-mile gallery of 360 photographs in 2010 along University Ave. The photographs, including those taken at our dojang of our students and facility, will be projected on store windows and building surfaces along University Ave. at night, and large photographs will be displayed on building and windows that can be seen by day.

If you’re curious about the project, check out Wing Young Huie’s website at http://www.wingyounghuie.com/. Or check out a Minnesota Public Radio article on the project here.
