I asked Photographer Jason Teale for some of his amazing images for our blog readers and he thankfully said yes. Jason is currently teaching English in South Korea and is also currently testing for Kyo Sa Nim. He took these beautiful images of Knife Defense (Dahn Do Maki), Fan Techniques (Bu Chae Sool), and Monk Techniques that we have turned into Desktop Wallpapers at the Kuk Sool Korean Championships.
We will be posting an interview with Jason down the road but ifyou would like to see some more of his amazing photography just visit his website at: www.jasonteale.com

When people first start learning Ssang Jool Bong they commit a couple basic Jool Bong Sins. Of course, practice, practice, practice when it comes to Ssang Jool Bong and this can rid you of those sins. However, these tips and tricks can help you on your way.
If you haven’t seen the way we do Ssang Jool Bong here, check this post: Ssang Jool Bong like you Have Never Seen it Before
1. Let the Chain Wrap
Too many people just hit the “stick” part of the Jool Bong off their shoulders, legs, and hips. You need to hold the tip of the Jool Bong right next to your body to let the chain wrap around the body part you are bouncing it off of. This way you will not get a bunch of bruises and you can have a longer, happier life without the pain of whacking yourself day in and day out.
2. Don’t Stop the Motion
Ssang Jool Bong is a weapon where you must continue the motion in a circular manner constantly. If you try to stop the motion in the middle of the air you may have some undesired consequences flying toward you face. Always try to let the motion be smooth and circular letting the chain wrap by bouncing or going around your body to change directions.
3. Use Two Hands
No, this is not baseball. But you need to practice with both hands. When you first learn Jool Bong you will only use one hand at a time. So make sure you practice with both hands, because in the near future you will be doing double and using both hands at the same time. Which can be pretty mind boggling for someone who has only practiced with one hand.

Each belt we are required to not only memorize but to also learn how to do each movement. But how much do you know? How much of the curriculum do you posses in your brain right now? I think you will be surprised on how much there is to learn when you are going for your black belt.
Here is everything broken down by technique set, forms, and weapons. Take the final number you have learned and divide it by the total and that is a percentage of how close you are to black belt. The numbers below are very conservative because I made forms only worth 1 point, but I did add some extra sets to maybe compensate for it a little but.

Kuk Sool Won at West Point is always talked about in a lot of schools but I personally have never seen anything about it. That is, until today. Big Thank You again to Kwan Jang Nim Gene Gause again for releasing another great video. Three big Kuk Sool names make appearances in this video and they are Kuk Sa Nim, Kwan Jang Nim Sims, and Sa Bum Nim Tim Challans.
It is a big deal that Kuk Sool was the only Martial Art chosen for this elite Military Academy. It speaks wonders about the comprehensiveness of Kuk Sool and how easily it can be applicable to real life situations today.
I don’t know if this was the whole club or just a featured group of the students at West Point. If anybody has any more info feel free to leave a comment.

According to the World Kuk Sool Won Association homepage there are 24 different traditional Korean Royal Court weapons in the curriculum plus Buddhist and Tribal weaponry. In this list I will give some descriptions as well as pictures and video to show the different weapons and styles of Kuk Sool Won.

Sword (Gum & Jung Gum)
In Kuk Sool I have seen two types of long swords used. The first is called a Gum which is traditionally a curved blade you see used when people are cutting in Kuk Sool and the other sword is a Jung Gum or traditional, Straight Bladed Korean Sword. You can find out the difference in a straight blade and Curved Blade from Kwan Jang Nim Dickson Kunz in this post titled Curved vs. Straight Sword- What’s the Difference? Round 2 of our Kuk Sool Won Wallpaper releases. This week I have posted 3 Wallpapers for all you Martial Arts fans of Kuk Sool Won that want to see more archery. Archery in Kuk Sool Won is one of the cooler things you can learn but is taught by a very select group of instructors in Kuk Sool. If you ever get the chance to learn some Kuk Sool Archery skills be receptive and practice. None of the images below were shot by me, just formatted them as Desktop Wallpaper Backgrounds for your computer.

Here is another video from the demo I did in South Korea when I lived there for a bit. Stuart Kyo Sa Nim (from England) and I got the chance to did this wonderful Staff Sparring Form we in Kuk Sool call Bong Dae Ryun.
It was interesting to mix the way I learned this form with the English version, and then of course we had a little bit of the Korean style thrown in as well. Sorry there is no sound on this video but the video should be enough to enjoy on it’s own anyway.

In Kuk Sool, Nunchucks or Nunchaku go by the Korean name of Ssang Jool Bong. Below I have posted a video from a demo I was in while I was living in Korea. We do different Ssang Jool Bong sets than what is traditionally taught in the United States and other places around the globe but in Korea it seems like a lot of schools do their own sets of Nuchaku or Ssang Jool Bong.
* Couple Notes: The other Non-Korean guy is Stuart Kyo Sa Nim from England, and Yes, the little guy in front has his chain break. Enjoy the video.
