Docublogging Master Lee [Video]

This is a demo done by Chong Kwan Jang Nim (Chief Master) Byung In Lee and some of his Black Belt Level students. It is a very informative video because the spokesman talks about the meaning of the techniques and forms they are doing, Here are some of the highlights:

  • Guhm Moo Hyung means the “Sword Dance Form.” It allows you to practice the use of Korean Royal Court Short Swords without actually having them on you
  • Kuk Sool Won is Primarily a Defensive Martial Art
  • In Kuk Sool, the idea is not to mimic exactly the movement of animals, but to mimic the purpose of the movement of the animal and change it to a human form
  • Fans are used not only to strike pressure points but to also disguise your movements
  • Oh Yeah…….and Master Lee is awesome.

This video was on YouTube and looks like it was produced by Docubloggers

Oldest Kuk Sool School in the States - Master Thomas Brewer [Interview]

master thomas brewerFirst Off, I would just like to give a huge Thank You to Kwan Jang Nim (Master) Thomas Brewer for answering our interview questions. Kwan Jang Nim was sent our interview questions because his student, Cynthia Dahn Bo Nim, won our birthday challenge.

Q: What is the Name of your school?

A: Kuk Sool Won of Berkeley

Q: Where is your school Located?

A: Berkeley, California

Q: How long has it been open?

A: The school opened in 1980 under Master In Joo Suh (now Chiefmaster). It is the oldest location in America.

Q: What is Your Kuk Sool Rank?

A: I am a Fifth Degree (Kwan Jang Nim)

Q: Where are you originally from?

A: I am originally from Kalamazoo, Michigan.

Q: What are your hobbies outside of Kuk Sool?

A: At the moment my hobby is rock climbing. It is great cross training for martial arts.

Q: Any other basic background info you would like to share?

kuk sool won of berkelyA: I started Kuk Sool on 1983. I moved from Michigan in January and started working on the Pacific Stock Exchange. I had taken Tae Kwan Do and so when I came out to California I started asking around about the different Martial Arts. I figured San Francisco had to have the best MA because of the large Asian population. At the Stock Exchange a couple of guys were black belts so I asked them. One asked me what I had taken and when I answered Tae Kwan Do he said that Kuk Sool Won was the best Korean Martial Art and I should check it out. He told me the other Black Belt that worked there had taken Kuk Sool and I should talk to him. I did and he told me that Kuk Sool was too hard and I should find a Tae Kwan Do school. That was all it took for me. I headed directly for the closest Kuk Sool school and signed up. I worked in San Francisco but lived closer to Berkeley so I signed up there. Master Byung In Lee was the main teacher. After five months I moved to San Francisco and switched to that school.

Q: When Did you Start Kuk Sool Won? Why?

A: At the San Francisco school I had a couple of different instructors before Kuk Sah Nym started teaching in the class again. In 1986 I earned my Black Belt and Master Sung Jin Suh came over from Korea shortly after that. I taught Kid’s classes and helped around the school for the next few years until Kuk Sah Nym asked me if I wanted to purchase the Berkeley school. I had been thinking about opening a school so it was good timing. I had tired of the Stock Exchange and thought I could train more if I ran a school. I took over Berkeley in December of 1989.

Q: What is your favorite Hyung? why?

A: My favorite hyung at the moment is Oon Hak Hyung. I have only known it for about a year so it is still new and still really, really challenging. I have never practiced a form that I couldn’t do 5 times in a row.

Q: What is your favorite technique or technique set (Ho Shin Sool)? why?

A: I don’t really have a favorite set of techniques. If pressed I would have to say Ki Bon Soo because that set is the keys to the kingdom.

Q: What is your favorite thing to teach?

A: My favorite thing to teach is techniques. Maybe it was my years of being around Kuk Sah Nym (when he taught, it was mostly techniques) but I like to see people’s faces when they see how a technique can work. When they get it!

Q: Where has Kuk Sool taken you in the world?

A: I went to Korea twice in the 1980’s. The first time by myself on a semi lark and the second time on a Kuk Sool trip. By coincidence Masters Jay Lee and Marlin Sims were in Korea at the same time on my first trip and I met them and went around Korea with them. Other than that I am mostly a homebody.

Q: What one thing would you tell any Kuk Sool student to be successful in Kuk Sool?

A: The one thing I would tell any Kuk Sool student to be successful is patience. Be patient with yourself and your practice. At the San Francisco school on Ellis Street there were newspaper clippings of the Grandmaster on the wall as you left. One of them was headlined something like “Grandmaster of Martial Arts says key is patience”. The Korean masters who taught then were not known for their support and encouragement. Many a class I left with my tail between my legs. But seeing that clipping reminded me that this was a long term process and if I quit I would not see the rewards of that process. For me that patience has paid off.

Q: Who has inspired you in Kuk Sool?

A: My biggest inspiration in Martial Arts has been Kuk Sah Nym. He is in another world when it comes to the martial arts. He exposed me to what Martial Arts can be. Not that I will ever get there but to know that is what I am working toward is enough for me.

Q: What is your favorite Kuk Sool memory?

A: I will always be fond of when the San Francisco school was in the Mission district and after class we would have dinner and Kuk Sah Nym would tell stories.

Q: Why Berkeley?

A: I ended up in Berkeley because it was meant to be. That might sound airy-fairy but it was the right place for me.

Q: Is the California lifestyle as laid back as they say it is?

A: The California lifestyle is not so much laid back as it is live and left live. People work just as hard if not harder than elsewhere (it’s soooo expensive).

Q: Have you ever been to Minnesota? and if you haven’t, why not? (it’s the Home of this Blogger)

A: Never been to Minnesota. The only thing I know about that area is what I read in the John Sandford novels. Boy, you sure got a lot of serial killers up there! I do hope to go on the seminar tour one of these years and if it reaches your area I would love to visit. *Which it does, just FYI for everyone

On October 22nd I had my birthday and a Kuk Sool Contest. The contest details were for that first three people to email me would get their instructor interviewed on this blog. Now that I have the first of three instructor interviews I think it’s time to release who the winners are and a little about themselves. Check back on this blog for the next instructor interviews and congratulations to the winners.

Cynthia Dahn Bo Nim
Kuk Sool Won of Berkely - KJN Thomas Brewer

“I’m taking the slow-but-steady path forward to my JKN rank next year. I started KSW in 1999 because I love martial arts, and when my daughters were in grade school I wanted them to have the advantage of martial arts classes early in life… so I selected Kuk Sool Won because I wanted the three of us to study something comprehensive… which Kuk Sool Won clearly is. A trial class with Thomas Brewer confirmed that Kuk Sool Won was exactly what I’d been looking for, and I’ve been delighted with it ever since! I love the way I am continuously challenged to expand my mental, emotional, and physical reach beyond any point I previously thought possible, and this is making a tremendous positive difference in all aspects of my life.

KJN Thomas Brewer is an extraordinary instructor who consistently inspires excellence in his students with personalized attention exactly when it’s most needed, and creative approaches to teaching what might otherwise feel tedious… or impossible. ”

Joy Ja Tti
Kuk Sool Won on Jeju Island, South Korea - KJN Oh Sang Hoon

“I have been doing Kuk Sool for 9 months in South Korea. My husband and I are from the US, but we moved to Jeju after graduating university to come teach English. We have been here for over 2 years and are planning on staying indefinately. I get to study KSW an hour a day, 5 days a week, almost entirely in Korean. It’s pretty sweet. I only wish I had discovered KSW 2 years ago when I first got here.”

Stuart Kyo Sa Nim
Kuk Sool Won of Norwich - KJN John Ives

Stuart and I trained together in Korea but he is obviously from the UK and Kuk Sool Won of Norwich. He will soon be testing for the rank of Pu Sa Bum Nim. In fact, we are such good friends I may even link to a funny photo of him when he was really little as a “Millenium Black Belt.” Stuart is the third one in from the left in the front row of kids.

Kuk Sool Commercials You’ll Love

Does your school have a commercial? I have found three different schools who have recorded and produced commercials for their school. In todays world of social media and the video craze online, why not have a commercial? It’s cheap and fun. Here are 3 examples of commercials from Kuk Sool.

The St.Louis commercial is a little shorter, which if I was airing on TV, I would probably go with because of the appropriate length. But the other two are very nice for if you are only going the online promotion route. Enjoy.

Leavenworth Kuk Sool Won (they call it more of a promo video)

Kuk Sool Won of St.Louis

- Sorry for the poor quality, if you go to their website it is much better. There is a link on one of the pop-ups for the video.

This one was too long for YouTube so click here to watch it: Click Here to Watch this Commercial

Sparring Drills: A Complete List

There are so many Sparring Drills flying around the world it is hard to find good ones that work and are fun for everyone. So I thought I would make a comprehensive list of all the drills I know and enjoy. If you have any other sparring drills you would like me to include in this list please add the name and description of the drill in the comments below. Feel free to print them out and give them to your instructor as well.

winning kuk sool sparring picture

Quick Terminology:

Jam: Defender “Jams” the motion of the attacker by moving in at the same time and attacking an open target.

Counter: Defender steps back and throws one or more strikes IMMEDIATELY after a wave of attack is over

Sparring Drills List:

Offense vs. Defense
Offense - Is on the attack // Defense - Can only Jam or Counter

Kicks vs. Kicks
Both sides can only kick. This is important in developing range and proficiency in kicking. It is the fastest way to dominate and score points in point sparring. Korea Kuk Sool sparring rules basically only allow you to kick. So if you are planning to go to Korea to spar at a tournament, only do kicks for almost every drill.

Kicks vs. Hand Strikes
One side can only kick while the other side can only use hand strikes

Hand Strikes vs. Hand Strikes
This is a drill that will help quickness with your feet and your hand strikes. You will need to move in, out, and around in a smooth, speedy manner.

Social Point Sparring
Everyone spars everyone else in the room for 2 minutes each. While sparring your partner you try to go by point sparring rules. Stop and reset after you both agree a point has been scored. If you both don’t agree keep going.

Free Sparring
Spar everyone in the room for 2 minutes at a time. Make sure you stay in control and if one partner is overwhelming the other partner back up and reset. Everyone needs to learn.

Point Sparring
Classic Point Sparring with a center judge and two corner judges. 1 point awarded for hand strikes and kicks to the body. 2 points awarded for head kicks

Full Contact Sparring
Not everyone loves full contact sparring. However, some people this is all they want to do. Make sure you wear the proper gear. I recommend some sort of face mask or cage on your headgear and a chest protector. Believe me, people will hit you hard.

King/Queen of the Room
Everyone in your sparring class spreads out around the entire room. When the instructor says go everyone runs around spars everyone. Chaos Ensues. If a point is scored on you, then you sit down on the side. Last Person standing is King or Queen.
* Points to the back do not count. You must score to the sides of the head, front of the head, or body.

Spin Kicks vs. Spin Kicks
Both sides can only Spin kick. Seriously Fun. It’s sometimes risky to use a spin kick because if you miss you are very open. However, if you practice you can be awesome. Especially in Korea, Spin Kicks are awesome because knock-outs are allowed and spin kicks are very powerful. * This drill is probably for more advanced students. Or students who have previous sparring experience from a different style.

Circle Drill
Both partners can only move in a circular motion as much as possible. Too many times I see how easy people get in a rut of moving forward and backwards in a straight line. This drill helps you ease into moving in all directions smoothly.

Across the Line Drill
Put down two pieces of tape on the ground where each partner starts. Then you go one point at a time. Designate one side as the attacker and one side as the responder. The attacker must try and jump across the line fast enough to score on the responder. The responder must be fast enough to jam or jump back and counter. There is only one jump of movement then you reset each time. Switching back and forth who is the attacker and responder.

Combo Drill
Combinational striking is one of the most important point sparring concepts. In the Combo Drill each side is only allowed to use combos. You can only attack or counter with 3 strikes or more. Using combos increases your likelihood of scoring a point when you commit to an attack or defense.

Korea Style
Basically, you can only do kicks and take downs. Kick defense techniques are great for take downs. You do get a point for a clean take down, but it has to be clean. Korea Kuk Sool tournaments do allow hand strikes but you must have both feet on the ground and you can not be advancing at all. Meaning: They are discouraged. * They do allow knock-outs in Korea Kuk Sool tournaments. I am going to say do not allow knock-out sparring in your school. Everyone wants to practice and live a healthy life.

* If you have a good drill I have not included please add the name and description of the drill in the comments section below

Today is Blog Action Day

Today is Blog Action Day for the Environment. We are so participating in this Going Green event. 15,000 and 1 Bloggers are posting and 20,000,000 readers are reading about ways to help the environment today. So if you have a blog get to it. Help the Earth.

Here are my 5 Kuk Sool Going Green Recommendations:

  1. Don’t use any paper today (pretty easy - use email or a laptop instead)
  2. Run or Walk to Practice instead of Drive
  3. Recycle that Water Bottle you use tonight
  4. Talk to your Family and Friends about Environment Issues
  5. Wash your Uniform on Cold (uses less energy)

Here are some other Kuk Sool Blogs I am pinging to get in on the issue:

  1. BabyPowderBoy Blog
  2. Blue Moon Blog
  3. Sa Bum Nim Mike Nebgen’s Blog

If you have a blog and want to be added to the list. Write a post about the environment and leave a link in the comments.

Those Pesky Pressure Points - Guide to Korean Names

Pressure Points have always had a leading role in Martial Arts. It so happens that Kuk Sool Won has pressure point targeting in almost every set of techniques. Emphasis on Pressure Points comes in Blue Belt with Hand and Foot Pressure Point striking (Maek Chi Ki and Maek Cha Ki).

It will always be tough (until you are a Master) to locate every Pressure Point for every technique. However, there are diagrams and and lists to help you locate and name each pressure point. Kuk Sool Won of Burton (Flint, Michigan) has put up a guide to help us a bit. This is a nice guide for both of the Blue Belt Pressure Point Striking sets because the name of each pressure point is listed in Korean. They also supply the diagram of the Lung Meridian below.

Maek Chi Ki (Pressure Point Striking with the Hands)

  1. Yuhl Gyuhl Hyul (lung 7)

Video: Master Gary Evarts Breaking Demo

Fresh release from the Great Lakes Tournament in Troy, MI. Master Gary Evarts does a pretty awesome breaking demo. Short but sweet. Breaking is something that takes a lot of concentration and proper technique to execute. You will hardly ever have a perfect breaking demo so always give it a second go if something messes up.

If you have never seen the website for his schools I think it is THE best Kuk Sool website out there right now and is worth checking out: Kuk Sool Won of Greater Rochester
