Many people come into our Martial Arts studio wanting to know if Martial Arts classes are right for their kids and what benefits they can expect. Here is a quick list of 3 reasons to put your kids in Martial Arts:

1. Discipline

Almost every parent that thinks about putting their kid in Martial Arts thinks about Discipline. It is well known that Martial Arts teaches kids strong lessons in discipline. Every class kids learn the discipline to treat their instructors with respect by bowing, using titles such as “sir” or “ma’am,” and by practicing kicks and punches to the commands of the instructor. Discipline is the basis of Martial Arts and every student learns discipline that will help them practice as well as help them in day to day life.

2. Exercise

Between TV and Video Games, it is harder for kids to find a regular form of exercise. Martial Arts offers a consistant schedule to come practice and get in some good exercise for kids. Most schools offer both aerobic and strength training activities for kids to do on a regular basis during class. Exercise keeps kids healthy both physically and mentally.

3. Fun

Kids often see Martial Arts in movies and television without ever knowing how fun the real thing is. Martial Arts practice for kids has the same benefits and fun as an adult class but usually includes game-like activities to keep kids attention and give them fun activities every class. Most kids that join our classes love to come back everyday and cheer when it is game time.

Every child that starts taking Martial Arts at our studio usually smiles with happiness by the end of their first class. Personally, as someone who started Martial Arts classes as a kid, I can tell how it has helped me through my day-to-day life with positive perspectives on discipline, fitness, and fun.

My daughter, a burgeoning tween, has been taking martial arts with me for more than a year and a half. I see huge advantages in giving kids, especially girls, exposure to physical education that demands a lot of self-discipline and really reinforces trust in and an understanding of their own bodies’ strength and capabilities.

As we approach the traditionally rocky years between mothers and daughters, I’m also hopeful that taking martial arts together can be our “together time.” In class we can be together, work together, cheer each other on (okay, maybe that’s total fantasy on my part) and leave all the fraught teenage crap aside for a while. Here’s hoping, anyway!
